Video to GIF
Turn a few seconds of a video into an animated GIF. Choose where it starts, how long it lasts, its size and how smooth it is. Your video stays on your device, and nothing is added to the GIF.
How to use it
- Choose your video, or drag it onto the box.
- Play it to find the moment you want, then press Start from the current point, and set the length.
- Press Make GIF, check the result and download it.
Keeping the file size down
GIF is an old format and is not efficient with video, so files grow quickly. Three things make the biggest difference: a shorter clip, a smaller size, and fewer frames a second. Around 480 pixels wide at 10 frames a second suits most messages and social posts.
Colours and sound
A GIF can show at most 256 colours in each frame, so smooth gradients such as skies can look banded. GIFs also have no sound at all; if you need the audio as well, keep it as a video, or use MP4 to MP3 to save the sound separately. Both are limits of the GIF format itself.
Which videos work?
The video has to be one your browser can play. MP4 and WebM work in current browsers; iPhone MOV files usually work too, depending on how the phone recorded them.

Are my files uploaded?
No. The work happens inside your web browser, on your own device. You can check: once this page has loaded, switch off your internet connection and it will still work. The page also tells your browser to refuse to load anything from, or send anything to, any other website, so nothing can be sent elsewhere even by accident.
