Compress images
Make photographs and pictures smaller in megabytes so they fit through email limits and upload forms. Choose a quality and, if you like, a maximum width. Every file is processed on your own device.
How to use it
- Choose how you want to save the images and the quality. The defaults suit most photographs.
- Choose your images, or drag them onto the box. You can add as many as you like.
- Download each one, or all of them together as a ZIP file.
How much smaller will my photos get?
It depends on the photograph and on what it was saved as originally, so the page shows you the before and after size of every file rather than promising a figure. Photographs straight from a phone or camera usually shrink a great deal. A picture that has already been compressed may barely change.
If a file comes out larger, the page says so. That happens when the original was already well compressed, and the right answer is to keep your original.
The two settings that matter
Quality controls how much detail is kept. Around 75 is a good balance for photographs; below about 60 you will start to see blotches, particularly in skies and skin.
Dimensions often matters more than quality. A phone photograph may be 4000 pixels wide, far more than a screen can show. Limiting it to 1920 or 1280 pixels wide usually cuts the file size dramatically with no visible loss on screen.
What happens to each type of file
With Best format for each file, JPG and WebP files stay in their own format. Pictures in other formats, such as PNG, HEIC or BMP, become JPG, which is far smaller for photographs. Pictures with see-through areas, such as logos, become WebP instead, so the transparency is kept; in browsers that cannot save WebP they stay as PNG. Each result shows its new format beside it.
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which is why it cannot be squeezed much without changing format. If you would rather choose, set Save as to JPEG or WebP. JPEG has no see-through areas, so transparent parts become white.
Hidden details are removed
The compressed copies do not carry over the hidden details that cameras store inside photographs, such as the date, the camera model and, on many phones, the location where the photo was taken. That is usually an advantage when sending pictures to other people.
Questions
Is there a limit on how many images I can compress?
No. The work happens on your own device, so there is no daily limit and no sign-up. Very large batches simply take longer.
Will the compressed image be visibly worse?
At the default quality, most people cannot see a difference on screen. You can raise the quality if you notice any.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The work happens inside your web browser, on your own device. You can check: once this page has loaded, switch off your internet connection and it will still work. The page also tells your browser to refuse to load anything from, or send anything to, any other website, so nothing can be sent elsewhere even by accident.
