How to use it

1. Choose how much smaller, or a target size such as 25 MB for email.
2. Choose your videos, or drag them onto the box.
3. Check the new size against the original, and download.

Which setting?

Much smaller (720p) suits most messages and emails, and still looks sharp on a phone. Smallest (480p) is for tight limits. Smaller keeps the picture size but lowers the quality. Aim for a file size works out the quality needed from the length of the video; very long videos may not fit a small target, and the result says so.

It will not always be smaller

A video that is already well compressed may barely shrink, or even grow. Every result shows its new size beside the original's percentage, and says plainly when you should keep the original instead.

HDR videos

HDR videos from recent phones cannot be compressed here without changing their colours, so the page refuses them rather than giving a washed-out result.

What is kept

The main video and its sound are kept. Subtitles and any extra sound tracks, such as a second language, are left out, and the result says when this has happened.

Limits

Videos are converted in the browser's memory, so very large files are refused before anything starts; the page shows the largest size tested on your kind of device. Long videos take a while, and the page must stay open and on screen while it works, particularly on a phone.

The page reads what is inside each file before it starts. Dolby Digital (AC-3) sound, which many camcorders use, is read by FilePresto's own converter, on your device. A few formats cannot be converted yet: WMV videos, and Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3) and DTS sound. If a file has sound that cannot be read, the page stops and says so, rather than making a silent video; you can then choose to convert the video without its sound.
