PNG for text, JPG for photographs
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so the edges of letters and lines stay sharp, which suits documents and diagrams. For pages full of photographs, JPG gives much smaller files.
How big will the images be?
Each page is saved on a white background, as it would appear on paper. At 150 dpi an A4 page becomes 1240 × 1754 pixels; at 300 dpi it becomes twice as wide and twice as tall, and the file is roughly four times larger. Very large pages are reduced automatically so that phones do not run out of memory.

Are my files uploaded?
No. The work happens inside your web browser, on your own device. You can check: once this page has loaded, switch off your internet connection and it will still work. The page also tells your browser to refuse to load anything from, or send anything to, any other website, so nothing can be sent elsewhere even by accident.
